The Village

The village of Skagaströnd has 460 inhabitants. It is positioned in the north, at a 260 km distance from Reykjavík and 160 km distance from Akureyri. The closest towns are Blönduós (pop. 840, dist. 22 km) and Sauðárkrókur (pop. 2600, dist. 53 km).

Although very small, the village has a primary school, a kindergarten, a grocery store, a gas station with a shop, two restaurants, a harbour, a pharmacy, a health clinic, a nursing home, a gym, a public swimming pool, a museum, a church, a community center, an artist residency, a wood workshop, a machine workshop/garage, an electric workshop, a car rental, a bank, postboxes, municipal offices and a campsite amongst other things.

There are endless opportunities for activities in nature in and around the village. Hiking in Spákonufellshöfði (suitable for most, check out the new bird watching house Kristallinn on the way) or the mountain Spákonufell are popular choices. Locally owned company Kayakar offers kayaks for rent by the hour for paddling along the coast and out to Húnaflói bay, on the school grounds there are football and basketball courts, a biking ramp and a playground for children, there’s a frisbeegolf-course in the town and a very nice golf course right outside of town, many people own horses and go horseback-riding and there’s a great skiing area in Tindastóll, 45 km from town.

During the winter it can be very windy in Skagaströnd and the village often gets its fair share of snow. However, there is no avalanche danger, no earthquake worries or eruptions since there is no active volcano in the vicinity.
